Today I have a great alternative for you for Taco Tuesday. I also have a great alternative for you for burger night. I’m calling it Smash Burger Taco night! This recipe combines the best of both worlds – tacos and burgers. It is literally a delicious smash burger served inside a taco shell with all your favorite toppings. My kids have such a ball with this meal, it really makes them so excited when they know it’s on the menu. I like it too because making it is so easy and everyone really gets into it.
The concept of this recipe is that you make a hamburger patty that fits on top of a tortilla. It’s a thin patty so it’s very easy to cook on the griddle and doing so keeps the tortilla nice and supple. Then you top the patty like you would a burger with all your favorite toppings, and fold it in two and eat it up like a taco. One of the things my kids really seem to like about it is that it isn’t as bready as a burger, the tortilla is much lighter than a burger bun. They also like the special sauce and toppings tucked into the taco “shell”, they are much easier to contain this way.
Of course, I’d recommend serving homemade french fries on the side with some yummy dipping sauces. You can’t go wrong with treating it like you would a true burger night. The alternative would be to serve it with guacamole and chips and salsa like you’re having your favorite tex-mex food.
Then, of course, the final decision is whether to serve this with a cold beer or a margarita for the adults! Bridging these two popular meals is a really fun way to change up a regular evening at home. We have a lot of fun with it and we hope that you do, too! Enjoy!
Smash Burger Taco Recipe
This is a really fun mash up of two of my children’s favorite meals. This can be a nice way to change up regular Taco Tuesday!
Ingredients:
For the Smash Burger:
1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean to fat ratio)
Salt and pepper to taste
6 small corn tortillas
1 cup shredded cheese
Optional toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, diced onions, pickles, jalapeños, avocado slices, salsa, sour cream, etc.
For the Special Sauce:
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon pickle relish
Instructions:
Prepare the Special Sauce:
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle relish. Stir well until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Set aside.
Prepare the Smash Burgers:
Divide the ground beef into four equal portions, shaping each portion into a ball.
Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat until hot.
Place a ball of ground beef onto the tortillas and press down to cover the tortilla. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place meat side down on hot skillet.
Cook the patty for 1-2 minutes on each side
Assemble the cheese on top of each patty while they are still hot, allowing it to melt slightly.
Top the burger patty with desired toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, onions, pickles, jalapeños, avocado slices, salsa, and sour cream.
Drizzle the prepared special sauce over the toppings.
Fold the sides of the tortillas over the fillings to create a taco shape.
