Caprese Pita Sandwich

I am so excited to share this recipe for a Caprese Pita Sandwich today. It’s so popular in our house that I honestly make it several times a week all summer long. It’s also one of the most popular sandwiches at our restaurants in the summer. There’s something about the flavors of tomato, mozzarella, basil, and balsamic all toasted together that is completely magical. It’s a true classic the world over for a good reason!

In this show I demonstrate how I make this sandwich on the stovetop. It’s honestly, I think, the easiest and best way to make it. A hot griddle is key to toasting the sandwich perfectly. I like it when it’s toasted evenly and the cheese is melted perfectly with the tomatoes. I make sure to be generous with the amount of balsamic and basil I use because they are necessary to round out the flavors of the sandwich

In this version I use my favorite Greek pita. However, if you don’t have pita on hand, you can also use a good country bread, ciabatta, or even a baguette! To round out this sandwich I recommend serving it with a delicious salad, or chips, if you’re in the mood for a little salt. For a party you could cut this sandwich into little triangles and make it bites that people could nibble on. For my children I’ll pack this in foil for camp lunches and it will stay warm and toasty until lunchtime.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to making and serving a caprese sandwich. I should also mention that I sometimes add some grilled chicken or a strip of prosciutto if I need a little more protein. That also tastes wonderful and always hits the spot.

I hope you enjoy this classic summer sandwich as much as we do!

Grilled Caprese Sandwich

This classic flavor pair is amazing in a sandwich. I can’t get enough of caprese salad in the summer! I like to whip these up in the summer when ripe tomatoes are everywhere. They always please a crowd and are yummy for dinner when it’s too hot to turn on the oven.

Makes 2 sandwiches Ingredients:

  • 2 Pitas

  • Fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced

  • Fresh tomatoes, sliced

  • Fresh basil leaves

  • Balsamic glaze

  • Salt and pepper

  • Olive oil (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Brush one pita with olive oil and lay flat on heated skillet or griddle.

  2. Layer the mozzarella cheese, tomato slices, and basil leaves on one side of the bread.

  3. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and season with salt and pepper.

  4. Brush the other slice of pita and cover.

  5. Flip the sandwich on the flat top to grill both sides, using a spatula or weighted pot to press down on the sandwich while it cooks.

  6. Serve immediately.
